3. Xylose and Xylitol

Xylitol is an odorless white crystalline powder. It has distinctive sweetness. It dissolves readily in water, and slightly in ethanol. It belongs to the D-category and is a natural product. Used as a diabetic supplement in food industry. Xylitol is often used in food and pharmaceutical industry as alternative sweeteners for diabetic diets, because:

1) Xylitol has low glycemic index and 40% fewer calories than sugar. Work with your weight watch/control.

2) Xylitol is actually good for teeth. Xylitol does not cause cavities of the teeth as often as the other nutritive sweeteners, so it is used in chewing gum. it stimulates remineralization of teeth, and it fights ear and sinus infections. Use xylitol for your desserts if they are to be fed to kids.

3) It's beneficial for diabetics. It is taken up slowly from the intestine so that it causes little change in blood glucose.

4. Taurine

It is white crystal or needle crystalline powder. Taste slightly acid. It has pK1 1.5 and pK2 8.74. Solubility in water at 12 oC is 6%. It is insoluble in ethanol. It is conditionally essential nutrient, important during mammalian development. Also used as seasoning agent. Taurine is a seasoning agent that naturally occurs in fish.

It is as essential amino acid for pets (dog and cats), therefore, is incorporated in the pet foods.

Research in more recent years suggests that faulty taurine in metabolism may be associated with certain kinds of epileptic seizures. Taurine also ameliorate the symptoms of epilepsy, and bipolar disorder, ref.: Neuroactive amino acids in focally epileptic human brain: a review.

5. Xanthan Gum

It is in white to cream-colored, odorless, free-flowing powder. Dissolve readily in water to give highly viscous solutions at low concentration. Forms strong films on evaporation of aqueous solutions. Resistant to heat degradation. Aqueous solutions are highly pseudoplastic. Used in foods or non-foods, as stabilizer, emulsifier, thickener, suspending agent, bodying agent, and form enhancer.

6. Caffeine Anhydrous

This substance is generally recognized as safe when used in cola type beverages in accordance with good manufacturing practice. Tolerance is 0.02 %. The actual functionality in soft drinks is that of a flavor modifier and enhancer.

7. Sodium Erythorbate

White odorless crystal powder. Soluble in water. Used as preservative and antioxidant.

8. Alanine & Glycine

Alanine is an odorless white crystalline powder. It has distinctive sweetness. It dissolves readily in water, and slightly in ethanol. It belongs to the L-category and is a natural product.
